Traffic Concerns Update

As mentioned in previous posts, several residents have been actively engaged with our representatives and DelDOT regarding the traffic concerns to identify what actions could be taken.

First of all, DelDOT delivered some yard signs which many were distributed at the Easter Egg Hunt last weekend. I have 10 remaining which we would love to distribute around the neighborhood. Please let me know if you are interested in one!

I am also happy to report we have initial feedback that while we failed the speed hump studies for our neighborhood, our representatives are working with us to identify some locations on Henlopen, Diamond and Binstead for a total of up to 10 speed bumps. We are currently reviewing their recommendations and will be having further discussions with DelDOT this week.

We are also assessing roads for additional measures like 4 way stops and radar signs but please be aware that we cannot be excessive in our requests. We have to be very thoughtful and deliberate to ensure these measures have the intended impact.

Please be aware that we are focused on areas of largest areas of concern based on those who have voiced their thoughts and opinions over some time. We are aware there may be other areas of concern in the neighborhood which we would be interested in learning about for additional phases. Please let me know by emailing [email protected] if you have specific concerns. I would appreciate knowing each of your opinions and how you think we can best work together to make things better for everyone.

As this progresses, ballots will be sent to residents to provide their support for the proposed speedhumps. Please show your support for our community and be sure to submit your ballot when the time comes.

Thanks again for being so engaged in our community. We all would like to do more so if you have any availability to assist, please reach out!

  1. I have seen the “blinking light framed” (yellow with curved arrow) signs at the Christiana Mall interchange, why can’t we do that to the 25mph speed limit signs in front of Powell Ford Park along Stanton Road? Noone obeys those signs. It would also serve as a warning when the raised crosswalk goes in. Or frame the speed limit signs at the beginning and end of Stanton Road? The LED “this is your speed” sign is either being ignored or used as a game to see how high a driver can get it. A combination of speeding problems (especially at night) is because when you enter Stanton Road, from either side, you can see it is a straight shot. You can hear cars “floor it” once they come off the RR Tracks. Believe me, I am very thankful for the raised crosswalk but when I saw the blinking framed “curve coming” sign at Christiana Mall it really was a great warning. And nothing has been done about speeding at all and drivers on Stanton Road have been speeding on this road for many decades.

    1. I attended the Poster session at Delcastle Tuesday and spoke to Sen. Spiros Mantzavinos and the Engineer assigned to the Stanton Road Raised Crosswalk. The focus of the poster session was the addition of Traffic Circles that will be added to Old Capitol Trail at Stanton and Newport roads, nonetheless we did get a couple of minutes to discuss Stanton road. Spiros and Rep. Williams are still working on the flashing signs, but the crosswalk should be done by early July. The Engineer said that the project will not delayed by a bidding process because of the scale of the project, so once they get started it should be completely rather quickly.
Also, yesterday DELDOT was taking test bores of Stanton road to see how thick the asphalt is, which is necessary to design the crosswalk. Though we didn’t discuss it, I believe they will making improvements in the storm water piping as part of the project.

We are already in discussions regarding additional measures for Stanton Rd. Flashing lights are not part of the initial work being done for the crosswalk but are not off the table as a future enhancement.

Thanks John. You are the first to bring up Kiamensi in discussion. I remember the police used to sit there years ago but I do not drive that way as frequently now. Can you provide more details?
